A Graduate Conference taking place at York
University
September 14th – 15th, 2012
September 14th – 15th, 2012
Proposal Deadline: June 15th, 2012
Resistance is a
term and concept widely employed and deployed in feminist thinking and
activism. It is used to make sense of struggles, failures, victories as well as
nonnormative practices, embodiments, identities, and modes of being. This
conference entices us to rethink and revisit resistance – in all its dynamic
and cacophonous forms; to consider collectively what resistance has meant,
where it has been, and the divergent directions it might take.
Possible
questions for exploration include: What modes and meanings of resistance are
available to feminists? Why is resistance integral to feminist thought and
practice? Which histories and stories of resistance do you find most
meaningful, inspiring, or transformative? What shapes has resistance taken in
your life? How is resistance difficult, demanding, dangerous, and perhaps even
impossible? How are resistances experienced unevenly and unequally – as a daily
occurrence for some and an occasional action for others? How are resistances
dynamic? How do resistances change, complicate, conflict and compete? What are
the complexities and tensions characteristic of strategic or spontaneous
resistances? How are processes of resistance energizing, agitating, misaligned,
or forceful? In what ways do acts of resistance reify while rebuking, rehearse
while reshaping, solidify while sublimating?
We invite
submissions from students, activists, artists, independent scholars, and
individuals or groups with stories and ideas to share. Presenters may submit
proposals for papers, panels, workshops, pecha kucha / lightning talks, visual
art or performance pieces, interactive presentations, or tales and stories of
resistance, as well as other formats. Proposals should be 150-250 words in
length, and artistic submissions should include a pdf or jpeg sample of the
work that will be shared at the conference.
To ensure
anonymous peer-review, proposals should be anonymous and accompanied by a
separate document that includes the proposal title, name of presenter,
affiliation of presenter (if applicable), and contact email. Presentations will
be restricted to 15 minutes in length. Please state in the proposal any space
or equipment considerations that will be required. Submit proposals to dynamicresistancesconference@yahoo.ca
Proposals will
be reviewed and notification of the outcome will be made by July 13th, 2012.
Please inform
organizers of any accommodation required by August 1st, 2012. All efforts will
be made to meet the needs of participants and attendees.
